Picking A First Kayak? Personalize Your Kayak To Your Needs!

If your new to kayaking and want to know some various types of kayaks or particular function of certain assets to various kayaks, than look no further. First timers always ask themselves first, “what type of kayak would be comfortable and fit both individual needs and affordable budgets?” There are many different types of kayaks, there are sit on top kayaks, as well as inflatable kayaks. If your looking for a great brand of inflatable sport kayak, then we recommend one great starter inflatable kayak the Sea Eagle SE-370. The Sea Eagle is a basic kayak with all the essentials and not so much of the modern pizazz of kayaks. Now if you are a more advanced, or even intermediate kayak-er, you may want to look further.

The Sea Eagle is very large and it is a kayak which includes 2 seats, 2 paddles and a  handy storage bag and a foot pump, in case of overflow. Now not all kayaks offer storage space, so you must ask yourself, will you be fishing? Camping or bringing gear? If so you need a storage place, now as far as the storage, “dry storage” is also a necessity to store “non wet” goods. Beginner kayaks often come with a repair kit just in case of the worst as well.

A lot of starter kayaks also include an I-beam construction and 2 skews on the bottom of the kayak, which gives way to better river and open water speed! Now if your a more experienced Kayaker, then we would possibly recommend a sit on top kayak, which is also loads of fun!

Recently a friend recommended the “Point 65N Modular Sit-on-Top Kayak” for a buddy of mine who was getting his second kayak and had just fallen in love with the pastime. The sit on top kayak, is beautiful if i do say so myself and is good for quality fishing. It has a very unique design which lets you convert the kayak into a solo boat within seconds, giving more support for fishing trips and other fishing or sport, related activities! It breaks down for easy storage and transport and even includes two seat backs of course! This kayak is nice too, because it also works great in both fresh water and salt water, as well as open water! So it’s great for basically everywhere, camping trips, fishing trips, maybe not white water rapids, but surely streams and rivers! I enjoy it myself and it’s a great, simple and fun kayak to take on the water. Whatever kayak you choose, check the specs. Is the kayak stand up or sit in? Is there storage? Dry storage? Can I go into dangerous rivers? Rapids? Can the kayak be used for fishing? Is the kayak good in open water? Once you find your fit and once you find the perfect kayak for your style enjoy the start of amazing adventures with your kayak side by side!

How to Make a PVC Fishing Rod Holder For Kayak

If you”e fishing on your kayak here’s a simple way to save a few bucks on equipment. Also this fishing rod holder is easy to make. The custom design gives you features you probably can’t find in an off the shelf  rod holder.

Here is a cheap, most functional, and very easy to make rod holder for Kayaks.
If you have a Scotty Rod Holder already, You can use the existing Scotty Base and Neck. If you don’t have Scotty rod holder on your kayak, you can by the Scotty base and neck separately. I prefer the Scotty Height Extender #259. The orginal neck (stock part on Scotty Rod Holder) may not give enough height for some kayaks.
If you have a standard kayak without a rear hatch it will be hard to install rod holder behind the seat. If you have center hatch or bow hatch, You may be install this home made rod holder – which comes with two vertical rod holders and two side-pointing rod holders. This may be enough if you had no rod holder or had only one rod holder.
If you have a raised center on your kayak, this will be a good rod holder to install.

Help! My Kayak Tipped Over! How Do I get Back In?

How to Re-Enter Your Sit-On-Top Kayak

Sit on Top kayaks have come a long way and really compliment kayak fishing, they’re faster, more stable than the older models. Most people will never tip their kayak and with some kayaks it’s almost impossible to do so but we at KFS strongly recommend that you practice re-entering your kayak before you ever think about kayak fishing.

Of course you should practice without all gear with you but keep in mind that you should consider how your gear could hinder reentry onto your kayak. First thing you need to do if the kayak has flipped over is get it right side up, one way to do this is to reach under and grab one side of the seat and pull toward you and this should spin the kayak around. Another method is to reach over the hull of the kayak and grab the other side (handle or seat strap) and lean back and this will turn the kayak over.

Upper body strength will aid in getting you back on but mostly it is about finesse and technique. Different kayaks have different areas that might be better to balance on and also to grab while you leverage to pop back on but that is why we are practicing it and learning what method works best your kayak.

You should always practice in water that is just below your head and then work up to deep-water reentry. Here is a reentry step by step on a Prowler 15′.

  1.  At this stage you should be just getting into a position that is feel comfortable to pop up.
  2.  Here the person is grabbing the side handle, this is working with this kayak but might not work on others. You should try to get some weight on the opposite side to better balance the kayak. Allow the kayak to tip toward you. Let yourself sink deeper into the water and allow the buoyancy of your PFD and your pulling to pop you up out of the water.
  3.  Now is where you should make your move and generate some power, this can be done by grabbing and also kicking with your feet.
  4.  Once you have come out of the water, pull yourself to the opposite side until your chest is over the gunwale, but most importantly… your butt/hips are over the cockpit. This may feel a little unnatural, but you will get used to it.
  5.  Once you have centered the middle of your body over the cockpit, roll yourself around until you find yourself in the sidesaddle position.
  6.  The completed re-entry! Now that you are sitting sidesaddle, just swing your feet inside the yak and you are done!

After you go through once you will newfound confidence on the water, chances are you will never have to use what you learned but it is nice to know you can.
