Anyone hand-line fish from a sit-in kayak?

I’m a day-tripper, but I have never fished from my kayak.

I don’t want a rod and reel; I want something simple, cheap, and compact to fish with.
I asked about a pocket-fisherman but was shot down.

So how about something even simpler; a hand-line with a hook on the end?

Can I catch a 20 pounder without being dragged all over the place?
I have never caught a 20 pounder and don’t think I will anytime soon. Realistically the fish would be 5-10 lbs

I need an ocean fishing pole.?

I was hoping for some recomendations for what kind of rod and reel to get to do some ocean kayak fishing. Mostly for rock fish. Any tips on types of lures would be helpful as well. I am on the central california coast as well. Thanks

What is a good kayak for fishing?

My cockpit 15′ Canadian Necky is tippy until until
I put a paddle float on one end and dig blade of
opposite end under shock cords that lace decking
behind my back. Leaning to the side of this improvised
outrigger helps peg the stability enough to work a stubby rod
and reel. I usually fish where freshwater delta enters ocean.
As sands dry at ebb I’ll go upriver to deeper channel until the
flood tide lets me escape. I’ll go ashore to drag out Bullhead
Shark; I have method to transform their eyeballs into quality
jewelry and Asian’s have a thing for my fin soup.
