Inexpensive Rod/Reel Combo for Inshore Saltwater Fishing?

Hi all,

I’ve been saltwater fishing pretty consistently for about 2 years now and really love it, but I’m in need of a new (and inexpensive) rod/reel combo. I’m a poor law student and I’m always at my family’s beach house during breaks. I just got a kayak, so I’ll be doing a lot of inshore fishing in Mobile Bay within the next two weeks. I also fish from sandbars in the Gulf, so I’m looking for something that will stand up to different types of fish, from ladyfish and whiting to red bulls and flounder. My price limit is around $200 for both the rod and reel, but the cheaper the better. I just want to get the most bang for my buck. I like Daiwa rods and my Shimano 4000 spinning reel, but I’m open to trying a baitcasting reel as well. I’ve heard great things about Daiwa, Penn, and Abu gear.

What’s the best option for me?

Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Better Kayak? Ascend FS12T or FS10?

im trying to figure out whether i should get the ascend fs12t sit on top angler kayak or the ascend fs10 sit in angler kayak.i mainly do canal, lake, pond, creek freshwater fishing but in the summer i switch over to backwater saltwater fishing.i want something that is going to be sturdy for me to put a bunch of things in (cooler etc…) but i also want it to be somewhat quick(not going for fast just average).i am 18 years old 6’2″ and weight about 175.what is the better choice?

Saltwater fishing questions?

I have a few questions about saltwater fishing. I usually go out on partyboats down around the keys, but, I want to try fishing the flats (by kayak).

First, when fishing for redfish (using cut bait), do you add weight to the line or would you use a jighead with bait. What I mean is, do you use a sliding weight or tie the weight to the line, etc.

How exactly do you use a “popper”. My understanding is that you just jerk the line to make a popping noise. Is this correct? And how often do you pop it (every few feet or more)?

And I have heard of “walking the dog” with top water plugs. What exactly is that and how is that done? Is it a side to side motion caused by just moving the pole?

And last, for all of you experienced flats fisherman…what baits do you use to target sea trout, redfish, bonefish and permit. Thanks for all the help…I’ll need it.

And P.S. – If you don’t know the answer to my questions, please don’t B.S. it…I would really like to learn the right ways. TY
