The Best Kayaking Spots in Austin, TX

One of the great perks to living in Central Texas is the year-round fair weather, perfect for spending a day outdoors.  One favorite activity among locals is kayaking.  There are many awesome places to enjoy this fun water activity in and around Austin, TX.

Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin can’t be beat for kayaking.  Many lakeside businesses offer rentals and lessons at reasonable rates.  One excellent option is to take the 4-mile route beginning at the Mopac Bridge and ending at Red Bud Isle.  The route takes about 2 hours to complete and is ideal for beginners and those with children.  You’ll experience the simple beauty of nature and the scenic views of downtown all at once.  At the end of your kayaking adventure, you will be conveniently located near downtown favorites including Whole Foods and Amy’s Ice Cream.

Just 30 miles south of Austin is the San Marcos River, located in San Marcos, TX.  The river is a favorite place for university students and locals to swim, float, and kayak during the warm seasons.  Framed by shady trees and full of wildlife from salamanders to waterfowl, the river is a relaxing place to explore nature.  For those wanting to rent equipment, TG Canoe Livery¬†and San Marcos Rental and River Services rent kayaks and tubes.

Head 20 miles North of Austin and you will find Lake Georgetown, another great kayaking spot.  Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lake is surrounded by several parks featuring camping and picnic grounds, boat ramps, and fishing docks.  If you’re up for an adventure, why not consider kayak fishing?  The lake contains many types of fish including largemouth bass.  Whether you chose to fish or do traditional kayaking, you are sure to have a great time at Georgetown’s tranquil lake.
