Tips For Buying a Used Kayak

Edit Article |

Posted: Nov 12, 2010 |

Buying a pre-owned or used kayak can be an inexpensive way to enter the sport of kayaking. Used models are usually in good condition and safe enough to provide many seasons of reliable boating.

Choosing the type of kayak is important. Most kayaks may look pretty much the same to a novice paddler, but there are actually many types of kayaks, each having advantages and disadvantages. While shopping for used craft, buyers may find the following types of kayaks: sit-in, sit-on, stand-up, sea, recreational, fishing, inflatable, motorized and others.

Doing a simple inspection is important before buying a used kayak. Look for soft areas, punctures or signs of previous repairs. Also inspect the seats, pedals, handles and straps for damage or wear.

Asking questions is a good practice when shopping for used kayaks. How old is the kayak? What are its strong points and weaknesses?

A water test should be performed before buying. Are their any leaks in the craft? Does it track straight? Is it balanced?

If the boat comes with paddles, safety gear or accessories, those should be inspected as well.

Serious kayakers should be ready to buy. Have funds on hand and access to a vehicle that can transport a used kayak when one is located. A bill of sale may also be necessary.

Used kayak sales are seasonal, with early Fall being the best time to find kayaks for sale. Many outfitters sell their used stock quickly, so its always good to find out in advance when kayaks are usually offered.

Where to buy used kayaks:

fishing guides

– outfitters, rental facilities, marinas

– online resources; eBay, craigslist, etc.

– flea markets, swap meets
